About a month later an insurance settlement that I'd been waiting 3 years for came thru. It was from a car accident I'd been in. Thank God it hadn't arrived til now! I applied at a nice apt complex near the home we'd been renting, and were about to be evicted from (we'd managed by having, for instance, 3 garage sales in a row).  The apt complex wouldn't accept me because I was working at a temp agency. I asked if they would accept 6 months of rent payment. They said yes.  I felt scared giving up most of the settlement, but wanted the 3 girls and I to have a safe comfortable place to live.

My (soon to be ex) stbx called the apt complex and informed the manager that he wouldn't allow me to move there because he wouldn't pay for it.  Then my ex wrote me and gave me a list of apt complexes he would allow the kids and I to move into. They were in the worst part of Vegas.

Woman 1:  I just divorced my husband.
Woman 2:  Why?
Woman 1:  We had problems over religion.  He thought he was God
.

The apt mgr wasn't fazed by my stbx's demands. The kids and I moved in.

My ex refused for months to cooperate with me to get car insurance and registration renewed on the truck.  The first time the police stopped me, I sobbed in despair and he let me go. The second time, the police let me go. The third time, the policeman sternly enforced the law - and towed the kids and my only source of transportation.  I had to walk to work.

I didn't have friends or family I could turn to. I asked a wealthy acquaintance for $600 to get the truck out of impound. Thank God she agreed. I paid her back over the next couple of years.  She and I became and remain to this day close friends.

My ex finally agreed to send a copy of his driver's license directly to the insurance company.  I guess he was afraid of what I would do with the information.

The truck was repossessed a few months later. I bought a $600 junker with no air conditioning - living in Vegas.

My stbx continued the lies and manipulations in court.

ps. A year later I tried to get the police report for both weekends. There was only the report my ex had filed from his point of view.  I didn't know that you had to request, insist, and follow thru on making sure the police write a report in case you'll need it documented for court.  The CPS report only said the allegations were unfounded. It didn't say what the allegations were, or about why I was cleared.  I wish I'd written the officer's name and followed thru on having a more lengthy report written.

Neither the CPS incident or the police report became an issue I had to overcome in either my case, or some years later when my new husband had filed for custody of his 13yo son and our family was evaluated (we won summer '99).  I was candid about both incidents.
